Reflections on life inspired by past decisions
to you

Have you ever had a moment that made you think how different your life might be if you handled a past decision differently?
Last weekend, I had one of these moments while watching the Florida Gators on their path to winning the college basketball national championship. (Congrats Gators fans!)
I was almost a Florida Gator, but instead, I’m a proud Ohio State Buckeye. It’s where I completed my PhD, I love following the football team (I went to almost every home game while there), and Columbus is a great city that has given me many great memories (people in the Midwest really are more friendly!).
While deciding where to go for my PhD, the University of Florida offered me a full fellowship. Plus, my wife and I both love Florida, so I’m not kidding when I say it was a close decision!
I just happened to catch the end of the Gators’ semifinal win Saturday night, and it got me thinking. What would my life be like today if I chose to be a Gator instead of a Buckeye?
For starters, a big portion of my wardrobe would be blue and orange instead of scarlet and gray.
I would’ve connected with a completely different set of people, and my research would’ve had a different focus, all likely sending my career (and life) in a much different direction. And maybe I’d be living in a completely different part of the country. Who knows, maybe I wouldn’t even have finished my PhD.
But the thought that gives me the chills is that I might have missed out on one of the happiest parts of my life – creating, growing, and running Fitfilled with Coach Kayla!
This is far from the first time I’ve reflected on past decisions. For example, I often think about what life would be like today if I hadn’t made the lifestyle changes I made in 2007 (and have stuck with since).
Based on my family history and prior health tendencies, I’d likely be diabetic (or close to it), overweight, and chronically depressed.
That’s nearly 20 years that I’ve enjoyed a better quality of life thanks to past decisions and commitments, and hopefully decades more to look forward to!
I’d say I’m proud, which I am, but that’s not quite the right emotion. I’m simply giving myself as much potential for happiness as I can.
Grateful is a better word. I’m grateful for the life I live, and for having the foresight and commitment in the past to help me get here.
How about you, friend? How do you feel about prior decisions that have shaped your current quality of life?
If they make you feel good, it’s a good sign that you’re on the right path, and also a good source of motivation to keep it that way!
Even if they bring negative emotions, it can still be a good thing. Let it be motivation for a better future!
Start doing things that will steer you towards a better future to reflect on years down the road. You don’t have to re-invent your lifestyle. Start small and build. But start now
Stay motivated,
Dr. Vin
