Protein bars - don't believe the hype
The basic nutritional principle that most people are overlooking

Do you eat enough protein?

Despite how important it is, most people don't.

Adding to the problem, most people don't have much time for food prep.

Protein bars solve both of these very real problems with ease – or at least appear to.

And with flavors like birthday cake, cookies and cream, and chocolate peanut butter (my favorite 🤫), eating protein bars makes you feel like you're getting the best of both worlds – eating something quick and "healthy" that practically tastes like dessert.

But is it really healthy?

Coach Kayla and I would certainly rather see our clients eat protein bars than not get enough protein, but it's in the best interest of their health and wellness to aim higher (which is exactly what we help them do).

Here's why:

Processed food (including most protein bars) is a major driver of so many health problems, largely because it tastes too damn good.

In technical terms, it's "hyperpalatable," which means it triggers your brain's reward system and keeps you wanting more.

Half joking but fully serious, processed food should be regarded as "recreational food" and "used" responsibly.

Even though I know better, when I'm in a protein emergency and scrounging for something reasonable, I can feel that dessert-craving part of my subconscious wanting to use the situation as a justifiable excuse to treat myself to a chocolate chip cookie dough protein bar.

But how much of a treat is it really?

Imagine wanting to reward yourself with a tasty indulgence after a committed stretch of clean living. Is a protein bar going to provide the satisfaction you're eagerly anticipating?

Probably not.

As you already know, too much indulgence will have consequences, like weight gain and a decline in mood, energy, and overall health.

Most protein bars, despite not being as satisfying as a true indulgence, can contribute to the same consequences. Particularly when they become a daily habit.

Although protein bars have recently received a lot of negative press, it's unfortunately not for this reason.

Earlier this year, the Clean Label Project brought to light high levels of heavy metals and other contaminants in some protein bars.

Consumer Lab called into question the accuracy of nutrition labels on some protein bars, and in one case, a synthetic fat that was conspicuously excluded from the ingredients list.

Even the Environmental Working Group has written about a variety of concerns associated with some protein bars.

But there's not enough emphasis on the bottom line – regardless of contaminants, inaccurate nutrition data, or undisclosed ingredients, most protein bars are more like junk food than health food.

The marketing makes protein bars seem like an excellent choice for people who care about health and fitness, especially if you're busy and need something "on the go."

As Chuck D and Flava Flav say, don't believe the hype! (Bonus points if you recognize that reference.)

I get it – you're busy. I am, too. So is everyone else. It's still possible, however, to eat well with limited time, and that includes getting protein from better sources.

Sure, sometimes you may be in a pinch and a protein bar is the best you can do. But a little planning goes a long way in making this a rare exception.

Get as much of your protein as possible from real food. Your more vibrant future self will thank you.

To supporting your health and wellness with better protein sources,
