What Independence Day can teach us about wellness
to you

Maybe you’re going to a party tomorrow? Or maybe this weekend? And you probably have a summer vacation planned that you’ve been anticipating for weeks, if not months?
Exciting, right?
How about upping the ante with the added anticipation of letting go and giving yourself a free pass to go all in on the chips, dips, sweets, and cocktails?
As great as that anticipation feels going in, it’ll quickly turn into discomfort and regret the instant you overstuff yourself.
And if that carefree-for-summer attitude sticks around, it’ll happen again … and again … and again.
Eventually, that early-summer anticipation will gradually give way to your pants getting tight and your energy becoming a distant memory.
That’s the hole that a carefree attitude can dig you into.
Summer shouldn’t be a free pass, but it also shouldn’t feel like being a prisoner either.
Tomorrow is Independence Day. Freedom comes with big responsibility.
Although I’m referring to democracy and national independence, freedom with your lifestyle choices comes with responsibility, too.
With the right level of responsibility, you can have a great summer … without the weight gain, bloat, fatigue, and regret that come with taking freedom too far.
In fact, your summer may turn out even better than you’d expect.
It’s not the overindulgences that you'll fondly remember – it’s the quality time with your favorite people.
Imagine being able to enjoy those memories without the downside of your pants fitting tighter and feeling like you need an end-of-summer detox.
You don’t have to be perfect, and you more than likely won’t be even if you try. Like I said about my 50th birthday, compromised lifestyle choices are a well-justified cost of nurturing and enjoying your social connections.
Even with just some restraint, you’ll more than likely keep yourself in much better condition than if you were to give yourself a free pass for the summer.
I hope you’ll kick back tomorrow and celebrate your freedom with your favorite people! But I hope you do so with the foresight that there’s still a lot of summer left … and there always will be.
I’ll be enjoying myself tomorrow, and so will Coach Kayla. And I’m sure we’ll both be a bit more lax than usual.
But neither of us will be boarding the all-or-nothing train and giving ourselves a free pass to disregard all restraint.
Cheers to independence, and having enough health and wellness to fully enjoy it!
